01 — The Method

The Red Hat /
Blue Hat Method

A simple way to know your role in any hard conversation. Most fights aren't about the topic — they're about two people wearing the same hat at the same time.

Red hat

The Sharer

You've got something to say and you need it to land. Your job is to make it safe to hear.

  • Speak from your side — what you feel, not what they are
  • One thing at a time, said softly enough to be received
  • Ask for something, don't just report a problem
Blue hat

The Listener

You're not on trial and you're not fixing it. Your job is to get it — before you answer it.

  • Stay curious longer than feels comfortable
  • Reflect back what you heard before you respond
  • Your turn comes — it just isn't now
Know your hat. Change the conversation. Two red hats is a fight. Two blue hats is a stalemate. One of each is a conversation.

How to break the cycle
that kills intimacy

Five insights from Brave Love, Great Sex.

01

The blueprint of love

How we were loved as kids shapes how we love now. A small disconnection can feel like real danger.

02

Criss-crossed lovers

One needs closeness before sex. The other needs sex before closeness. Both wait for the other to go first.

03

It's a pattern, not madness

Slow the moment down. Separate what happened from the story your brain told you.

04

Risk vulnerability

Swap criticism or shutting down for "I miss you" and "I'm afraid I don't matter to you."

05

Security sets passion free

Safe love isn't boring love. Secure couples are more open, playful and satisfied in bed.

Brave Love,
Great Sex

Harnessing attachment theory for passionate relationships

Does great sex always fade over time? Research says otherwise. Securely attached couples have the most frequent sex — in the greatest variety, with the least inhibition. But that level of intimacy takes communication, vulnerability and trust.

With Dr. Laurie Watson, I show how to identify negative cycles, replace protective strategies, shift perspectives, enhance sexual conversations and build real closeness.

04 — About

From the firehouse
to the therapy room

I'm a renowned trainer of couples therapists in Emotionally Focused Therapy, and a sought-after supervisor and therapist.

I served as a New York firefighter during 9/11 — and that experience is exactly what I teach from. Therapists learn from me how to stay calm and de-escalate high-conflict couples, the same way you'd work a scene that's already on fire.

My online training platform, Success In Vulnerability, has trained thousands of therapists, and I travel across the globe giving couples tactical skills to create the connections they deserve.

With Dr. Laurie Watson I co-host the podcast Brave Love, Great Sex — Couple's Therapy for Lasting Connection, and together we wrote the book of the same name.
